I'm Getting Married Tomorrow!

Good morning Divettes,

Just a real quick post to say that I am still around, just very swamped with my very own personal real-life romance. I am marrying the man of my dreams tomorrow. It's been a whirlwind of planning and life the past few months, preparing for the big day. I, of course, got sick last week, and have had a nasty chest cold for 7 days. I'm finally feeling better, so here's hoping I'll be in tip top shape for the wedding day (and night ;-p) That would never happen in a romance novel - the bride getting sick just before her big day! Though I suppose it could be a chance for great conflict in the book! It's certainly been a hell of a thing, trying to work, and get better, and finish up all the million and one little last minute details.

But I am off now to go get ready for my rehearsal and dinner! Wish me luck!

The Bias Against Romance, and Acting Like a Professional

When I started writing romance two years ago, I had an idea of what I was getting into. After all, romance is famous for nothing so much as being "formulaic," "easy to write," and "just about sex." True, romance specifically requires a happy ending--or at least a happy-for-now, so in that sense, many people consider it predictable. After all, if you know the main characters are going to get together in the end, what's the point? As I was writing, however, I realized that in romance, it isn't the destination that's important but the journey, and that journey took me to some fascinating places. I noted on a friend and editor's Facebook post about a similar topic that for this trilogy I've had to research, among other things, Russian culture and language, bipolar II disorder, what happens when a skate blade completely severs a tendon, the NHL Players' Association's collective bargaining agreement, the process for investigating an alleged sexual assault in New York State, and bronchoalveolar carcinoma. (So tell me again that romance doesn't require any research?) 

What I did not anticipate is how deeply the horror community misunderstands and despises romance--and as someone who has spent most of her career writing horror, this enrages me. I would expect the horror community of all people to understand what it's like to be disparaged and disrespected. Horror in any form is frequently dismissed altogether because of its associations with violence, its critics not taking into account the wealth of psychological and "quiet" horror that balance out the more extreme variations. When I see horror writers doing the same thing to romance, when the extent of their knowledge is revealed to be thirty-year-old Mills & Boon paperbacks, I'm reminded of insecure playground bullies who make others feel bad in order to boost their own self-confidence. It's sad and more importantly, it's unprofessional. In the past few months, I've seen a horror writer refer to romance as "mindless," and I've come across this gem in a horror publisher's guidelines: "Dark Fantasy/Supernatural Romance – Yuck." I fully expect a publisher to list the genres they don't accept. What I don't expect from an alleged professional is their opinion on that genre, rendered in so juvenile a way. (Not to mention that dark fantasy and "supernatural" romance are not the same thing.)

Listen--I was one of those people who used to deride romance and tout myself as superior because I didn't read or write that crap. Then I met a bunch of awesome romance writers. I learned. I grew--which is the most important thing you can keep doing as a writer. I discovered that I wanted to write it, that I loved writing it, and that I put more time, effort, and research into The Firebird Trilogy than anything I've written thus far. But one thing I cannot conceive of doing is to publicly insult an entire genre and by extension all the people working in it.  

If you don't like a genre, that's your prerogative. No one likes everything. But if you're going to conduct yourself as a professional, it would behoove you to educate yourself and act like one. It's a tough business, and we're all in this together. Let's give each other some support.

She licked her lips and inched closer.

He moved his hands along the sides of her breasts and over her nipples, flicking them gently with his thumbs.

“Oh God,” she moaned.

His cock thickened painfully, and he knew then, if he didn’t get her to agree, it was going to be a long, lonely night—And his hand wasn’t going to do it for him this time. He needed to sink into the warmth of her body, to feel her legs wrapped around his waist as he pounded into her.

“Just sex. Nothing else. Just two people helping each other get off.” He rolled her nipples between his fingers and pinched slightly.

“Oh please.” She rolled her eyes.

When the idea to seduce her had first popped into his mind, he thought it would go a lot smoother than it was. “Okay, then how about this. One kiss.” He held up his index finger. “If it’s weird or awkward or you don’t like it, I’ll go back to my room and leave you alone.”

“And if it’s not weird or awkward?”

“Then we go farther. If you want.”

She paused for a moment then shoved him hard enough to cause him to fall back on the bed. Then she climbed on top of him, straddling his waist, her hands on either side of his head so that she was poised above him. “Just call this what it is. You want to fuck me. Plain and simple.”

“Damn right I do.” He rested his hands on her waist then moved them down to her ass. He gave her cheeks a firm squeeze then held her down on him. The heat of her pussy seeped through his boxers, and his cock jerked in response. “I want to fuck you.” He lifted his hips, driving his erection harder against her. “I want to hear you scream my name.”

She bore down on him, and his stomach clenched. “And if I say no?” she asked.

“If you wanted to say no, you would’ve by now.  You would’ve put your shirt back on and kicked me the hell out of your room. #Cats Rule! (And Dogs Drool?) #Movies #NewAdult #NoPromises

Happy Friday, friends!

I'm still celebrating the release of new adult romance, No Promises. My heroine, Sam, works as a vet tech who also rescues feral cats on her own time. Cats play an important part in the story, especially one bossy guy named Big Boy. I've always enjoyed movies featuring animals--especially cats--and thought I'd list a few that you might enjoy, too.

Cat's Eye

A film written by Stephen King, based on his short stories. A stray tabby cat is a featured player in two of the stories in this horror anthology and the hero in the third. He battles an evil gnome in order to save young Drew Barrymore.

Harry and Tonto

This is a road movie featuring a senior citizen and his best friend, a cat. Art Carney plays Harry who has plenty of adventures with his furry orange buddy, Tonto. A funny and touching film.

Stuart Little

This movie is based on the children's book by E.B White. The main character, Stuart, is a mouse who is adopted by a human family. Snowbell (voiced by Nathan Lane), the white cat who already lives there, resents Stuart and plots to get rid of his rival. (All ends happily, of course.)

Alien

Everyone remembers Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) as the sole survivor of toothy, drool-dripping alien in the scary sci-fi adventure. But they forget Jonesy, the orange cat who employs sneakiness and smarts to survive and escape along with Sigourney.

Walk on the Wild Side

This is a campy, over the top movie. One of those it's-so-bad-it's-good guilty pleasures. Though not in the main story, a stray black cat is featured in the beginning and end title sequences of the film. I think the cat represents the wild and untamed side of the characters. This is one of the well-known works of graphic designer/filmmaker Saul Bass. Here's a link if you'd like to see it yourself:

I'm back again with a guest post and review of Winning Streak by the wonderful and talented Katie Kenyhercz!

I've got to say, I really loved this book. Now, I admit I might be a tiny bit biased, as I was one of Katie's critique partners way back when on the first book in this series, On the Fly, and I had a good long while to fall in love with Madden in that book! So when Katie told me he was getting his own book, I was ecstatic! And Winning Streak definitely does not disappoint! I loved this book start to finish. Madden and Saralynn both have some serious issues, and the obstacles to their relationship are many and intense. These were both stellarly believable characters and their time together on the page sizzles. This story really touched my heart and gave me some warm fuzzies, in addition to some serious sexual tension that threatened to burn up the pages! Can't recommend this book highly enough. Or the series for that matter. I've always been a bit of a hockey fan, but not hugely into the sport, so don't let the hockey scare you off. This is a wonderful series, and I can't wait to see what's in store next for the Las Vegas Sinners.

Winning Streak is an anomaly in the Las Vegas Sinners series because I never intended to write it. I'd planned to have a hockey hero in every book. However, when On the Fly came out, I got a lot of reader feedback asking for Madden's book. They fell in love with Jacey's sweet but hapless brother and wanted more for him. I'd already planned Full Strength, the goalie's story, for book 2, but when it came time for book 3, I put a poll out to my readers. Who did they want first, Madden or Dylan Cole, the rookie turned young captain? Madden was the resounding winner.

I started writing Winning Streak and hit wall after wall. I knew I had to deal with Madden's gambling addiction, but beyond that, I wasn't sure what to do with a non-hockey playing hero. Enter young professional and relationship train wreck, Saralynn Reese, the goalie's younger sister from Full Strength. Saralynn is a former mean girl looking to better herself, and that made her both a challenge and a joy to write. I had to keep her sympathetic and show her depth but still hold onto the snark and a bit of the high maintenance that makes her funny. I had the best time writing her because she is almost nothing like me, which was different from writing Jacey and Allie, my two previous heroines. 

The fun of Winning Streak is that you have two people who are broken in the same amusing way. They were beautiful and shallow for most of their lives (at least that's what most people saw) and now both want to improve. Throwing them together is like the blind leading the blind, but they do learn about themselves through each other, and I love that. Madden's struggling to gain his sister's trust and respect after a gambling relapse years back, and Saralynn's trying to get people to take her seriously by taking charge of the Sinners PR department. Her first assignment is to clean up one of Madden's media messes.

I love the way these two play off of each other, and they both go through some rough growing pains but struggle to do their best.

The 4th Sinners book, Home Ice, is already out, and naturally focuses on young NHL phenom, Dylan Cole, who hits his first ever slump and can't seem to deal. He falls for America's figure skating sweetheart, Lorelai Kelly, who broke her ankle in the last Olympic Games and is struggling to get back on her blades and stay in the spotlight while she moonlights as the star of Sin City on Ice.

The 5th and final book in the Sinners series is Fair Trade, and it will release this December. It follows Grayson Gunn, a player in his early 40s who's looking to retire at the end of the season. He'd played his whole career for his home team out of loyalty but they never made the playoffs, and they mercy trade him to the Sinners for one last chance at the Cup before he hangs up his skates. He's intrigued by the new team assistant physician, Olivia Parker, who had worked for an AHL team before getting the Sinners' offer. They're both recovering from painful divorces and trying to get their bearings in Las Vegas when an unexpected chemistry pulls them together even as they try to stay away.

I still plan to write a collection of short stories catching up with each couple from the series and entitle it What Happens in Vegas because I've had several readers say they wanted to know what happened to everybody. Happy to oblige!

I will be very sad to see this series end :-( But I am so excited that Home Ice is Dylan Cole's story and I can't wait to read it!

The women laughed, a beautiful melody that rang through his entire being. Craig watched as she straightened and he could now see long, wavy black hair, falling against a ruby-red silk blouse. She reminded him of a Victoria Secrets model—long and lean, with a hint of curve.

“That’s why I like you so much. It’ll be a few minutes, if you’d like to have a seat.”

Craig shifted his attention back to the contract in his hand and purposefully read the title five more times. Slowly. He listened as her shoes clicked across the hardwood floor, waiting until the sound stopped before turning in her direction. She’d taken the chair he’d previously occupied and was sliding her phone into a black designer clutch.

Then she greeted him with a smile that still held a spark of amusement. He took a deep breath and swallowed. She had a hint of summer tan that made her skin glow, a touch of sheer gloss on her lips, and chocolate-brown eyes that instantly warmed him to the core.

His throat went suddenly dry and his mind raced for something to say. He stared silently, feeling like a teenage boy who’d never spoken to a girl before. Somehow, he found his footing and stood, then walked over to the chair next to hers. “Craig Stone.”

Texting All Hearts is a collection of seven novellas of various romance genres. In each story, it is a text that "gets the ball rolling." Aside from that, this collection covers a wide range of romance sub-genres.

"Her Cowboy Dom" by Bliss uses a trope I've seen often in historical romance-- the "reading of the will", wherein H/h are forced to spend time together to meet the requirements of inheritance. In this modern day story, Jess has been left a large ranch by her deceased older brother and his best friend Tate has been left the stock. The terms of the will require Tate, a rodeo rider, to stick around for thirty days. Neither Jess nor Tate are happy about this. Jess blames Tate for her brother's demise while Tate lusts for Jess but doesn't want to subject her to his dominant ways. This was a very sexy story about two people who have to overcome misunderstanding to find love. I felt for Jess, wanting to assert herself and follow her own dreams and being thwarted by two headstrong men (brother and lover) who just want to "protect" her. Contains BDSM themes. Hot!

"Midnight Road" by Lorelei Buckley was fun because it wasn't what I expected. The title had me thinking it would be romantic suspense, but it threw me for a loop. Every time I thought I knew what was happening, the author threw in a twist. Drew's mired in depression after the death of her husband, but how can she work through it when he seems to be haunting her? Her old friend Dominic shows up, angry that she's not been taking care of herself. Drew and Dominic take advantage of their long-suppressed attraction and begin an affair while trying to figure out what's happening to all the houses along Midnight Road and the people who live there. This story is a genre-bender, mixing second-chance-at-love, paranormal and even sci-fi.

"A Lethal Affair" by Debra Jupe really got me with its characterization. I loved the heroine, Daisy, who is a toughie with a heart of gold. She's had a hard life and her work as an exotic dancer makes her view life cynically. But when her friend, another stripper, suddenly disappears, Daisy does everything she can to try to find her. She's helped by Miles, who has his own reasons to find Beth. Sparks fly between Daisy and Miles, and the danger threatens when some of Daisy's co-workers are found murdered. The secondary characters are interesting, too, but Daisy stands out for her honesty and courage. The story had such a great build up, I was a bit disappointed that it seemed to wrap up so quickly.

"Sexting Texas" by Darah Lace was an emotional rollercoaster. This story really tugs the heartstrings. For those who love friends to lovers stories, this is a winner. Texas is keeping Will strictly in the friend zone, though he wants much more than that. A mistakenly sent raunchy text makes Will up his game when he sees how Texas reacts to sexy talk. There's some good erotic fun here as Will tries to win Texas over. Feelings run high in the story, and once or twice I wanted to clunk the characters' heads together and tell them "talk!" But readers will cheer for the hard won HEA.

"The Dom Delivers" by Nese Lane is another BDSM entry with lots of sexy times as Jenna explores her submissive nature with her delivery man who also happens to be a Dom. Jenna's a curvy gal and just beginning to emerge from a personal loss. Aydan delivers more than flowers and packages--he helps her gain confidence in her sexuality and her ability to submit. Readers will enjoy seeing Jenna blossom. I loved the supporting character Cedric and the menage scene at the end was the cherry on top of this vanilla swirl sundae.

"Wounded Hearts" by Linda LaRoque was a very touching story of a woman trying to overcome the loss of her fiance. This story would be considered a sweet or "clean" romance as it contained no explicit sexuality, but that did not detract at all from the emotion. When Sarah meets Brandon, a scarred veteran who was close to her fiance, she feels drawn to him. I loved how Brandon was depicted, as such a noble man who did not feel worthy of her. This story really tugged the heartstrings as both characters struggle with their feelings and Brandon deals with the effects of PTSD. And then comes twist that I did not foresee.

They played Mexican standoff until she finished in the sink. When she turned off the water and reached for a towel to dry her hands, Jack was right there.

She stared at the towel in his hands, water dripping from her fingers onto the floor. Without waiting for her to decide, he reached out and grasped one hand between his. Maddie startled, stepped back, but though she pulled, he refused to release her hand. As he rubbed the towel over each finger, her palm, the back of her hand, he watched her eyes dilate, her breathing quicken until he wondered if—and kind of hoped—she might pop the single shiny button holding her vest closed. Her surprise kept her compliant as he switched hands, drying the other one and enjoying the look of hunger barely shimmering across her face.

The moment didn’t last, though. As if finally realizing what was happening, Maddie snatched her hand back. “Don’t.”

“Why not?”

She didn’t answer. The stubborn press of her lips holding back the words made him want to kiss her, to break through that ironclad control until all the reasons for her withdrawal, all the secrets she held, spilled out. Maddie was a woman with a lot of secrets, secrets that kept her apart from life. He’d simply have to peel them away one by one until nothing was left between them but skin and sweat and sex. And God, he couldn’t wait for the sex.

He leaned forward, deliberately invading her space, warming her skin with his breath. “Maddie—”

Swiping her hands on her jeans as if Jack had somehow contaminated her with his touch, Maddie turned away from him. “I’m headed out, Tommy Ray.”

The older man grunted a reply as he lifted the tray of food for the poker gang. “Drive safe.”

“I’ll walk you to your car,” Jack told her.

“No.” She kept walking. A leather backpack, worn with use, waited near the back door. Maddie slung it onto her shoulder without a backward glance.

Jack followed her out the door. “It’s not optional, so stop arguing—if you ever stop arguing.”

“I don’t.”

“Is that supposed to scare me off?” he asked. The hot Georgia night immediately beaded sweat on his brow. He swiped at it, ignoring her ignoring him. “I’m the kind of guy who loves a challenge, you know.”

    "Thank you, Mr. Rutledge." Rachel snatched the hoodie from his hands and tied it around her waist with a firm yank. She didn't want to chance it falling in the dirt again and it was going to be a long weekend. At the rate they were going, it was going to be a full-on ice storm between them.

    A flash of humor crossed his face. "Do you think maybe you could call me Matt?"

    "That depends."

    "On what?" Matt cocked his eyebrow with surprise.

    "On whether you can stop dissecting me like one of your frauds."

    Who doesn’t love a ghost story? Even if you don’t believe in other worldly spirits, it’s fun to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the little chills running up your spine. This story features not only a spooky old building, but also a mysterious disappearance and a sexy conflict between dueling investigators.

    Rachel Winestock believes in ghosts and spirits. In fact, they are her livelihood. She is a paranormal investigator who’s been hired to investigate Bremore Asylum, a long abandoned hospital once used as a warehouse for society’s poor and unwanted, including unruly children and “disobedient” wives. This puts Rachel in direct conflict with Matt Rutledge, who is not only a skeptic, but a debunker of psychic phenomena. He not only wants to prove that Bremore is not haunted, but to demonstrate that Rachel is a fake. In spite of their opposing views, Rachel and Matt feel an intense attraction to each other.

    I loved how the characters in this story were placed in such delicious conflict. As they investigate the asylum where a previous investigator has disappeared, they discover they must work together not only to unearth secrets, but to save their own lives. Rachel is performing this task not just to salvage her career, but to earn enough money to rescue her beloved grandmother from a substandard nursing home. Rachel’s devotion to her grandmother made her a very sympathetic character.

    I liked Matt, too. He’s an honest man who works to expose phony psychics who take advantage of needy, desperate people (think a younger, more studly James Randi.) He’s clever and brave and ready to step into the hero role when danger threatens, but also secure enough to let Rachel take the lead when necessary.

    The story has plenty of twists and turns and more than one mystery must be solved along the way. There are surprises, too. When Matt and Rachel must deal with a very real person who wants to harm them, a ghost may be their only ally. I really enjoyed Asylum not only for the thrills and chills, but for the sympathetic characters and the sweetly sexy romance.
