“What are you worried about?”

He debated what to say. Be honest and screw things up now? Or just keep his mouth shut?

“If you don’t tell me, I’ll pester it out of you.” Michael munched on his slice of pizza. “Is it a kid? One of the other teachers? Me?”

Oh boy… “I’m not afraid of being alone. I get I’m a geeky guy who talks football and stats. I like my comic books and superhero movies. I know my limits, and I’m not the kind of guy who hooks the hot man. I don’t understand why you’re interested in me.” There. He’d been honest. “I’m not sure what you expect. If you want a quickie or a one-night, I’m not sure it’ll work. Let me know now so I can deal accordingly.” He gripped the plate so tight the edge ripped.

“You cut right to the chase once you open up.” He moved the plate to the glass-top coffee table. “I’m not a ‘couple of dates, a fuck, and it’s over’ kind of guy. If I say I like you, it’s because I’m interested.”

“Oh.” He wasn’t sure what to think.

“Now.” Michael took the plate from Niall and scooted closer on the couch. “About that confidence issue.” He curled his fingers under Niall’s chin. “I like comic-book movies and football too.”

“But…”

Michael placed his thumb over Niall’s lips. “It’s been hard sharing a hallway with you.” His knees brushed against Niall’s, and his breath warmed Niall’s cheeks. “We were friends and I knew you weren’t interested in becoming more because of our jobs, but it was difficult. I wanted to spend time with you doing more than talking about school. You’re very sexy.”

“In a geeky way,” he said around Michael’s thumb. He sucked Michael’s thumb into his mouth. Maybe if he redirected Michael, they’d stop talking about his lack of self-confidence and get down to what he knew Michael wanted—sex.

“You’re teasing me.” Michael eased his thumb from between Niall’s lips. “You’re dangerous. You almost made me forget what I wanted to say.”

“That was the point.”

I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside is full of sin, and the first night I escape, I know it’s true. Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me. He makes me his own girl.

My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am.

That’s the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play. And it’s terrifying, even for me. Because the only thing darker than my past is his.

Excerpt:

The bed is the largest one I’ve ever seen, but somehow too small for two people. Too small if one of the people is Ivan. He’s physically large and, more than that, terrifying. What will he do to me? I can’t fight him. God, I’m not sure I want to try. Home.

In the end I push back the heavy blankets, almost as thick as my sleeping pallet in Harmony Hills, and climb onto the bed. The pillow is perfectly soft, so clean, and I let myself drift away. I’m floating on a cloud, plush and high up.

I dream in those moments. I dream about color and light. I dream about the sky.

There is a deep voice from above and all around me, telling me to get on my knees. Commanding me to pray. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever skipped bedtime prayers. The first time I haven’t begged for salvation. I’m not going to beg, not ever again.

The hand on my face doesn’t feel angry. It isn’t a slap for my insolence. It strokes down my temple and cups my cheek. My eyes flutter open. Ivan.

His hand falls away.

“Candace,” he says in the same deep voice of my dream.

And there’s a look in his eyes, the same look Leader Allen gives Mama. The same look he started giving me. That look is the reason Mama sent me away.

“You’ll stay here,” he says softly. “I don’t want you to dance, but you can stay.”

The allure of it beats through me, a heart of its own, thumping away to a dream that isn’t mine. Safety. Home. I want those things, but I want freedom more. I want the flash of lights and of skin. I want the power those women had onstage.

Ivan wants to put me in a cage, but what I really want is to fly.

“Okay,” I lie, because one sin becomes many. Leader Allen taught me that, and he was right. I’ll convince Ivan, though. One day I’ll dance on that stage, and Ivan will watch me.

One day he’ll teach me everything there is to know.

“Good girl.”

The praise washes over me, undeserved and darkly pleasurable, a stroke along my spine. It feels good, but I know what it is. A trap. A chain around my ankle to keep me on the ground. In this moment, it locks me so tight that I’d accept anything he did to me. If he were to touch me the way the woman with the kind eyes meant. The way Leader Allen touches Mama during prayer.

Ivan leans down, and I hold my breath. Large hands take hold of the blanket, lift slightly. I feel everything between us—anticipation and denial, lust and fear corded together. We feel them together, breathe them in through the air, pulse them with each beat of our hearts. It’s a kind of knowledge, this feeling, connecting a thousand nerve points to the core of my body. This is what he meant by teaching me. This and so much more.

Then he pulls the blanket higher, tucking it around me. “Good night,” he says, eyes glittering in the dark.

He is silver and light, made even brighter by the shadows behind him. It’s strange, the disappointment I feel that he isn’t going to touch me. He isn’t going to teach me. Not tonight. “Good night,” I whisper back.

Then he’s gone, shutting the door against the dark, locking me in. And I slide away into sleep, without dreams, without color, with only the shameless black of contentedness, knowing I am safe for the night.

BLURB:

Jenny Cohen defines successful independence: she put herself through college, couldn’t ask for better friends, owns a consulting firm, wears designer clothes, and just moved into her dream home . . . But she’s alone, except for her ailing mother whom she supports in a nursing home. As the marketing consultant for Chester, Dorsey & Tanner, she’s surrounded by male attention. Too bad it’s the overly-protective big-brother type.

Architect, Craig Stone, hasn’t looked at another woman since his wife passed away four years ago. His time is taken—building a career while trying to be both mother and father to his eight-year-old son. But when his appointment with the largest development firm in Nashville is double-booked with a black-haired beauty, he finds himself reaching for new possibilities.

The attraction sets off more fireworks than the Fourth of July. Yet, their relationship is riddled with issues neither one of them expected. Somewhere in the middle they must find a way to compromise or let go of a chance for love they may never find again.

Excerpt:

All thought froze, as a beautiful voice cut through the near-silence of the room. Craig stared at the portfolio for just a second more before turning his attention to the front desk. He couldn’t see far enough around the corner to get a good view. What he did see . . . a pair of black strappy stilettos.

“Better you than me. He’s in an awful mood. Jeffry was out for just three days and his temp
messed up the entire week’s schedule.”

Craig quietly moved down the row of chairs. Though his line of sight was much improved, he still couldn’t see the face behind the voice.

“You know it’s only going to get worse. It’s just Monday. How bad is it, really?”

She must be leaning over the desk, because her voice was now a faint whisper and the scene
that greeted him was a firm derriere and a pair of runner’s legs that made his heart skip a beat.

“I’m not sure. I do know that you’re double-booked with the gentleman sitting across the room. Don’t look now.” Someone cleared their throat. “He’s a new architect Nick’s consulting with on the expansion designs. Too expensive to reschedule. Sorry.”

“Oh.”

“Brandon’s supposed to be part of their meeting and the temp had it on his calendar for noon tomorrow, instead of nine today.”

“I guess I can take second place. Only because it puts Brandon at my mercy. Tell Jeffry to come to the lobby and we’ll work it out. I’m always flexible, especially when it gives me an edge.”

The women laughed, a beautiful melody that rang through his entire being. Craig watched as she straightened and he could now see long, wavy black hair, falling against a ruby-red silk blouse. She reminded him of a Victoria Secrets model—long and lean, with a hint of curve.

“That’s why I like you so much. It’ll be a few minutes, if you’d like to have a seat.”

Craig shifted his attention back to the contract in his hand and purposefully read the title five more times. Slowly. He listened as her shoes clicked across the hardwood floor, waiting until the sound stopped before turning in her direction. She’d taken the chair he’d previously occupied and was sliding her phone into a black designer clutch.

Then she greeted him with a smile that still held a spark of amusement. He took a deep breath and swallowed. She had a hint of summer tan that made her skin glow, a touch of sheer gloss on her lips, and chocolate-brown eyes that instantly warmed him to the core.

His throat went suddenly dry and his mind raced for something to say. He stared silently, feeling like a teenage boy who’d never spoken to a girl before. Somehow, he found his footing and stood, then walked over to the chair next to hers. “Craig Stone.”

Book Tour: Of Love and Vengeance @LouiseLyndon1 #historical #giveaway #GoddessFish

**Louise will be awarding a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour! Please scroll down for the form.**

Hi all, I have Louise Lyndon on the blog today. Since I am a very nosy person, I was curious about her interest in historical romance and books/authors that may have influenced her. What follows is her response. Welcome, Louse!

I have to hold my hand up and confess I haven’t read many works of fiction set in the medieval period. I know, that goes against the first thing you’re told when learning the craft of writing – read the genre you’re interested in, and when you feel you’ve read enough, read some more! But, I wanted to come into the genre with fresh eyes. But, that is not to say authors have not influenced me.

I find a lot of my ideas while reading history books, or articles online. And yes, even Wikipedia! A line or two may get my creative juices flowing. For example, when I started ‘roughly plotting’ – I am a panster not a plotter – my current work in progress, I read an article about King Henry I, and how his brother William Rufus was ‘accidently’ killed on a hunting trip therefor paving the way for Henry to become King.

My mind immediately started thinking about the person who ‘accidentally’ shot William Rufus. Were they against William Rufus becoming king? Did Henry pay a hit man? Or was there a third party who was engineering just who should rule England? And if so, who was this third party? And it goes on from there.

I love the internet because it has made research so much easier and quicker and you can do it from the comfort of your lounge room. Best of all, you can do it in your pajamas! But, there is nothing like picking up an actual book and skimming its pages. I have a few ‘go to’ books that have been influential on my writing. The first few may surprise you…

Anything by Terry Deary is brilliant. Yes, his books are aimed at kids, but they have loads of useful information without bombarding you with lots of historical data. After all, I want to write and I don’t need to know every minute detail that happened in the medieval era. If you haven’t picked up a Horrible Histories book, do. They’re greatly entertaining AND educational.

My other two go to books are coincidently both called, Life in the Medieval Castle. These two books offer great insights into what a medieval castle must have been like, from the food they ate, where they slept, and the different roles and jobs within the castle walls.

These are just a few authors who have influenced me. I’m always adding new authors and books to the list. And I am always open to suggestions for new books!

BLURB:

Forced to marry Lord Aymon to ensure her young nephew’s survival, English Lady Laila vows undying hatred for the Norman she holds responsible for the deaths of so many innocents. Discovering Aymon has committed an act of treason gives her the chance to seek vengeance he deserves.  But can Laila let Aymon die at the hands of the king once she learns the truth?

A hardened Norman warrior, Lord Aymon has lived through atrocities no man ever should. With the invasion of England over, all he wants is a quiet life and a wife who will give him heirs and obey his every command. Instead, he finds himself wed to feisty and outspoken Laila. But when she learns the truth of his treasonous act, can Aymon count on her to keep his secret?

Excerpt:

Laila heard them long before she saw them. Their angry, frenzied shouts and thunderous roars filled her ears. With her hands tied securely behind her, she was dragged up the lane toward Tyburn Gallows, where she was to be hanged for a crime she did not commit. The mob sounded blood thirsty. Large. Frightening.

There was no sign of Aymon. Or Hugh. Had they left her alone to die?

Her chin trembled and her nails dug into her palms.

She suddenly fell to her knees and screamed until she tasted blood at the back of her throat. She kicked out and tried to crawl free as her hair was almost torn from the roots as she was pulled up and shoved along the lane.

Her eyes burned with her tears.

“I am innocent!” Laila screamed.

They came around a corner, and that’s when she saw them. There must have been a least two thousand men, women, and children, hungry for her blood. And when they saw her, they erupted into a wild fever of roars and cries for a slow and painful death. Their thirst had been piqued, and now it must be sated.

Laila was shoved into the center of the clearing.

She glanced wildly around in a desperate search for Aymon’s towering, bulky frame. She could not see him.

But what she could see was the Tyburn Tree. The gallows she was to be hanged from. The executioner, hooded, stood beside the tree as he waited patiently for her. Laila’s mouth suddenly went dry.

Excerpt from:

Sexting Texas by Darah Lace

“Got ‘em.” Jangling her keys at him to show her success, Texas pulled open the screen door. It took her a moment to get the key in the lock, but she managed and the tumblers clicked. She turned to thank him. “Goodni—”

He stood close, too close, his big frame crowding her space. She glanced up at his face, but it was too dark to make out his expression. The hand at her waist pushed her against the door. His head lowered. Warm breath teased her lips, and the slight scent of beer tickled her nose.

“Will?” She barely got the question out before his lips brushed hers softly, lightly. Her tummy took a little tumble. Then his mouth opened over hers, his tongue moving in slow to skim hers, and the little tumble turned into a high-rise free fall.

A low groan rumbled in his throat. His other hand palmed the back of her head as his hips ground into hers. She arched against him, aching for the hand on her ribs to venture farther up, aching for his muscular thigh to slide between her legs.

His tongue eased from her mouth, and his lips were gone, along with the weight of his body. The last to leave were his hands as he stepped back and adjusted the hat cocked to one side of his head. He cleared his throat. “Sorry.”

She wasn’t. Like the kiss they’d shared fourteen years ago, this one was a total surprise. And like that kiss, it rocked her world. She hadn’t even thought about stopping him, not for a second. Wished he’d do it again. “Too much alcohol.”

“Yeah, and talk of sex.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah.” Definitely.

He backed up to the edge of the porch. “See you Monday night.”

“Monday?” God, she sounded like a moron. What was it they said about alcohol and brain cells?

“Town meeting, remember?”

Texas groaned. Maybe she’d get drunk again Monday night so she’d have an excuse not to go. “I hate those things.”

“Me, too.” Will pivoted on the ball of one boot and took the steps two at a time. “Night.”

“Night.” Texas watched him for a second, that sauntering walk unmistakable, then sighed and let herself in the house. She shut the door, leaned against it, and traced her lips with fingers that shook. No doubt about it, William Charles Sanderson had kissed her for the second time in her life. And once again he’d apologized.

Enjoy an excerpt from Trust in Me by Skye Warren:

Tyler sighed, resigned. “Okay. Come on.”

And really, isn’t that just what every girl wants to hear from a guy agreeing to fuck her? But I wasn’t like every girl. This was a job, that was all.

He led me to the bed and pulled me down with him. But I didn’t want him, not like this. I didn’t want him to have sex with me, not if he didn’t want me. I only remained here to protect those girls from forced sex, from rape. I couldn’t do the same thing to Tyler, not even to spare myself pain.

“Wait,” I said. “You don’t have to do this. Please don’t.”

“I have to,” he said, his teeth gritted.

This was all wrong. “You don’t want this,” I whispered.

He pulled my hand to his jeans where I felt his hardness pushing against the zipper. “Does this feel like I don’t want it?”

I already knew the body had nothing to do with the mind. “No,” I said. “I can tell you don’t. It doesn’t matter about me.”

He pushed me onto my back and loomed over me. “This is happening. Are you going to fight me?”

I shook my head. No, I wouldn’t—couldn’t—fight Tyler, not ever. No matter how I pledged my allegiance to Carlos, I couldn’t help but fight and resist every time he hurt me. With Tyler, it hurt just to be near him, but I’d endure it, if only to pretend a few minutes more.

He kissed me again, and it was almost real. Like a real kiss between two people having sex, as if I knew what that felt like. Both of us were doing this for business or to avoid pain or whatever reason, but none having to do with passion or pleasure. Still, I felt a long-buried stirring of passion. And, too, I felt pleasure as his lips molded over mine and his body lowered.

The weight of him, the heat of him, was delicious. Somehow I felt safe with him, which was a stupid error to make after working so hard and so long to be careful. He was working with Carlos—I couldn’t forget that. If Carlos ever found out I was double-crossing him, he wouldn’t kill me. He would keep me alive and make me wish I were dead.

Tyler’s hands found my breasts and easily slipped under the small halter top. He looked down at my breast in his hand. I knew I had beautiful breasts. Not because they looked beautiful to me—I hated the sight of them—but because I’d been told so. From very young, I’d been told how pretty they were—large, despite my lanky body, and pale with dark, hardened tips.

He groaned, just staring. “So beautiful.”

I hated that he said that, that he noticed what all the other men had noticed, that he was like them after all. At the same time, I almost preened. At least I had pleased him in some way. One of these days my contradictions would tear me apart.

His fingertip, blunt and rough, traced from the top of the slope to the tip.
“Why are you doing this?” he muttered, and it didn’t sound like he was talking to me but to himself.

Why was he doing this? Why did he need to get mixed up with Carlos? It would only end badly for Tyler. I had seen enough of Carlos’s business partners disappear to know that. God, but I didn’t want to think that Tyler would even want to be involved. Carlos had lots of different businesses, but they were all bad—drugs, guns. And my personal crusade, my curse, human trafficking. Which was Tyler involved in?

“You shouldn’t be here,” slipped out on a moan.

“I know,” he said, still mesmerized by my hated breasts.

“It isn’t right.” Why couldn’t he see? I wanted him to be good, but if he couldn’t do that, then at least I wanted him to be safe.

     "I can’t stop,” he said.
