I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside is full of sin, and the first night I escape, I know it’s true. Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me. He makes me his own girl.

My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am.

That’s the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play. And it’s terrifying, even for me. Because the only thing darker than my past is his.

Excerpt:

The bed is the largest one I’ve ever seen, but somehow too small for two people. Too small if one of the people is Ivan. He’s physically large and, more than that, terrifying. What will he do to me? I can’t fight him. God, I’m not sure I want to try. Home.

In the end I push back the heavy blankets, almost as thick as my sleeping pallet in Harmony Hills, and climb onto the bed. The pillow is perfectly soft, so clean, and I let myself drift away. I’m floating on a cloud, plush and high up.

I dream in those moments. I dream about color and light. I dream about the sky.

There is a deep voice from above and all around me, telling me to get on my knees. Commanding me to pray. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever skipped bedtime prayers. The first time I haven’t begged for salvation. I’m not going to beg, not ever again.

The hand on my face doesn’t feel angry. It isn’t a slap for my insolence. It strokes down my temple and cups my cheek. My eyes flutter open. Ivan.

His hand falls away.

“Candace,” he says in the same deep voice of my dream.

And there’s a look in his eyes, the same look Leader Allen gives Mama. The same look he started giving me. That look is the reason Mama sent me away.

“You’ll stay here,” he says softly. “I don’t want you to dance, but you can stay.”

The allure of it beats through me, a heart of its own, thumping away to a dream that isn’t mine. Safety. Home. I want those things, but I want freedom more. I want the flash of lights and of skin. I want the power those women had onstage.

Ivan wants to put me in a cage, but what I really want is to fly.

“Okay,” I lie, because one sin becomes many. Leader Allen taught me that, and he was right. I’ll convince Ivan, though. One day I’ll dance on that stage, and Ivan will watch me.

One day he’ll teach me everything there is to know.

“Good girl.”

The praise washes over me, undeserved and darkly pleasurable, a stroke along my spine. It feels good, but I know what it is. A trap. A chain around my ankle to keep me on the ground. In this moment, it locks me so tight that I’d accept anything he did to me. If he were to touch me the way the woman with the kind eyes meant. The way Leader Allen touches Mama during prayer.

Ivan leans down, and I hold my breath. Large hands take hold of the blanket, lift slightly. I feel everything between us—anticipation and denial, lust and fear corded together. We feel them together, breathe them in through the air, pulse them with each beat of our hearts. It’s a kind of knowledge, this feeling, connecting a thousand nerve points to the core of my body. This is what he meant by teaching me. This and so much more.

Then he pulls the blanket higher, tucking it around me. “Good night,” he says, eyes glittering in the dark.

He is silver and light, made even brighter by the shadows behind him. It’s strange, the disappointment I feel that he isn’t going to touch me. He isn’t going to teach me. Not tonight. “Good night,” I whisper back.

Then he’s gone, shutting the door against the dark, locking me in. And I slide away into sleep, without dreams, without color, with only the shameless black of contentedness, knowing I am safe for the night.

THE COWBOY LASSOS A BRIDE by Cora Seton #GoddessFish

THE COWBOY LASSOS A BRIDE
                                                              by Cora Seton

*Please note: Cora will award a $100 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour.*

BLURB:

Jake Matheson loves everything about ranching the Double-Bar-K, except for his father’s controlling nature. It’s bad enough the old man won’t step down and let him run things his own way. Now Holt has demanded that Jake find a wife—in the next thirty days. Jake knows just the woman he wants–Hannah Ashton–but they haven’t even gone on a date, let alone been together long enough for him to propose. He’ll have to work fast to secure her hand in marriage before his time is up.

Hannah Ashton loves the fifteen hundred pound bison she rescued from being the object of a trophy hunt. She’s grateful for Gladys’s temporary home on the Double-Bar-K—and for the chance it gives her to see Jake on a daily basis. But now his father, Holt, is threatening to kick Gladys off the ranch—or eat her!—unless Hannah follows some very strange instructions.

Jake is thrilled when Hannah agrees to move into his cabin, but his family seems dead set on breaking them apart. Meanwhile, Hannah is all set to head off to veterinary school, but Jake seems to want a traditional wife.

Will a pregnancy scare unite Jake and Hannah in a common goal? Or will it drive them apart for good?

Excerpt:

“Sleep with my son for two weeks.”

Hannah’s jaw dropped open. Her cheeks flushed to what she was sure was a brilliant red. Had Holt lost his mind? Had she? He couldn’t have said that out loud.

Could he?

“You heard me right, but you can get your mind out of the gutter.” Holt’s laconic tone was shaded with a hint of laughter at her expense. “I said sleep with him, not screw him. What you two get up to is on your conscience. All I ask is that you share a bed.”

“I… what…?” She glanced around wildly, wondering if anyone else had overheard him. Surely this had to be a joke. Would Holt’s youngest son, Rob, come rushing out with a video camera? He was always playing practical jokes.

“Sleep with my son for fourteen consecutive nights. All night. That’s it. Your bison gets a pasture, food, and shelter for the rest of her life. What do you say?”

She sputtered, searching for something to say that encompassed the depth of her anger that he’d even speak to her this way. She settled on sarcasm. “Two weeks? I’ll have to check my calendar. Some other guy’s father might have extorted me to sleep with him one of those nights.”

Holt chuckled. “Just how many bison do you have stashed around the ranches in these parts?”

“I don’t need to listen to this.”

“By the way, the son in question is Jake.” He eyed her sharply and Hannah felt the heat creep up her cheeks all over again.

Jake?

An image of them together in bed—naked, disheveled—flashed into her mind and her body tingled with the idea of it. She and Jake could have a lot of fun between the sheets.

She forced the thought out of her head. “Not interested.”

“Then I guess I’ll get my pasture back sooner than I thought. And I’ll have to find some other woman to get my son’s mind on marriage.”

“Damn it, Holt—that’s not fair.”

“Which part isn’t? The part where I eat your bison or the part where another woman sleeps with my son?”

The Cowboy's Email Bride by Cora Seton #review #giveaway #GoddessFish

*Please note: Cora will award a $100 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour.*

THE COWBOY’S E-MAIL ORDER BRIDE
by Cora Seton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Ethan Cruz should be mending fences on his Montana ranch, but instead he's driving to the Chance Creek, Montana, airport - to pick up the bride he didn't know he had. This latest salvo in his ongoing practical joke battle with his best friend, Rob Matheson, has gone too far, and Ethan plans to send his "bride" right back home, then get busy plotting his revenge. One look at Autumn Leeds changes his mind, however. Perhaps he needs a bride, after all. A breathtakingly beautiful city bride.
Autumn Leeds needs a story - fast - or she's going to lose her lucrative contract with CityPretty Magazine, so when she sees the crazy video plea for a modern mail-order bride for a cowboy, it sounds like the story of the century. Making a video of her own, she casts herself as the perfect mail-order bride for a rancher, but when she finally reaches Montana, she's surprised to find Ethan's the perfect cowboy husband-to-be. Against her better judgment, her plan to keep her handsome groom at arm's length disintegrates into a night of passion spent in his arms.
Ethan knows he can't keep playing this game - he has to come clean with Autumn and tell her the truth; about the practical joke and about the state of his ranch. He's about to lose it all because of the debts his mother racked up before his parents' deaths. Now his sister, Claire, wants to sell the ranch and collect what little money they can. He'll be out of a home and a job, and in no shape to support the bride he desperately wants to marry, after all.
Autumn's in bigger trouble than ever. Not only has she fallen in love with the subject of her expose - she might be carrying his child. If she doesn't write this article and secure her contract for another year, she'll lose everything - her career, her apartment, and more importantly, her family's approval. The only alternative is to stay and marry Ethan. But how can she trust a man she's just met when she knows too well that men always let you down?
Can a love based on lies last?
Excerpt:
She glanced up at Ethan to find him glancing down, and the warm feeling curved around her insides again. Surely New York men couldn’t be shorter than this crew, or any less manly, but she couldn’t remember the last time she’d been around so much blatant testosterone. She must be ovulating. Why else would she react like this to a perfect stranger?
Ethan touched her arm. “This way.” She followed him down the hall, the others falling into place behind them like a cowboy entourage. She stifled a sudden laugh at the absurdity of it all, slipped her hand into her purse and grabbed her digital camera, capturing the scene with a few clicks. Had this man – this…cowboy – sat down and planned out the video he’d made? She tried to picture Ethan bending over a desk and carefully writing out “Sweet. Good cook. Ready for children.”
She blew out a breath and wondered if she was the only one stifling in this sudden heat. Ready for children? Hardly. Still…if she was going to make babies with anyone…
Shaking her head to dispel that dangerous image, she found herself at the airport’s single baggage carousel. It was just shuddering to life and within moments she pointed out first one, then another sleek, black suitcase. Ethan took them both, began to move toward the door and then faltered to a stop. He avoided her gaze, focusing on something far beyond her shoulder. “It’s just…I wasn’t….”
Oh God, Autumn thought, a sudden chill racing down her spine. Her stomach lurched and she raised a hand as if to ward off his words. She hadn’t even considered this.
He’d taken one look and decided to send her back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

**Nona’s Review of The Cowboy’s E-mail Order Bride by Cora Seton**

Ethan Cruz wasn’t expecting a bride. In fact, after his fiancée dumped him when she discovered his precarious financial state, he’s turned his back on women. One night while drunk he regales his buddies with his idea of the perfect wife. As a practical joke, his friends record his ramblings and upload the video to the internet. From the applicants who respond to this viral “Who Wants to Marry a Cowboy?” Autumn Leeds is selected and flies to Montana to meet her supposed fiancé.

What Ethan and his pals don’t know is, Autumn is an imposter. She’s a reporter for a snarky city magazine, and hopes to gather enough info to write an article mocking the “country bumpkins” and save her job.

So neither Ethan nor Autumn is being truthful. He doesn’t know that she’s there under false pretenses and she doesn’t realize the video was just a gag. Ethan intends to be honest but as soon as he lays eyes on his “fiancée”, he’s smitten and keeps delaying the moment of truth. It doesn’t take the couple long to get busy in the bedroom. Autumn, meanwhile, finds herself falling not only for Ethan, but for country life as well.

This was an enjoyable, sexy story with complications galore. Ethan’s parents left him in debt. He wants to hold on to the ranch, but his sister, who owns half, is pushing him to sell. Ethan’s ex-girlfriend seems to be stalking him, even though she’s already hooked another man. Autumn’s self-esteem suffers from constantly comparing herself to her successful mother and sister, neither of whom is dependent on a man.

It’s only a matter of time before the dominoes begin to fall and each secret is revealed. The author did a nice job of making me care about the main characters. Neither one is perfect, but they’re basically decent people who are troubled by their respective lack of honesty. They’ve both been hurt in the past. Ethan is hard working, loves his ranch and dreams of becoming a husband and family man. Autumn, to her surprise, finds her own dreams align with his and is determined to help him save his land.

We get to meet Ethan’s cowboy friends, as well as others in the town, and they’re an interesting bunch who I hope to see more of in future books. The author even manages to make Ethan’s bad girl ex sympathetic by the end of the story. I recommend The Cowboy’s Email Order Bride for all lovers of romance—and cowboys!

Summertime Dream
by Babette James

BLURB:

The Fourth of July is over, but for these summer lovers the fireworks have just begun.

An unexpected inheritance brings business consultant Christopher Gordon from Los Angeles to quaint Falk’s Bend. He’s carved a week from his demanding schedule to list his great-grandparents’ house for sale and explore his roots. However, disturbing family secrets and the sweet temptation of writer Margie Olsson derail his plans, challenging him to seize the elusive dream missing from his hectic life — love.

A recent brush with death shook Margie’s life, but not her dreams and she’s ready to move forward. Only, standing up to her loving, over-protective family isn’t easy. Helping Christopher explore the derelict mansion and unravel his grandmother’s mysterious past should be a harmless fun taste of independence. But when her experimental summer fling ignites into unexpected love, how can her small town dreams work with his big city life?

Excerpt:

Margie’s soft mouth and her kisses, as sweet and shy as her voice, raised a tumult of unexpectedly intense and tender feelings.

And they’d just met.

Christopher groaned and wrenched his lips from hers. “I should probably apologize,” he murmured against her cheek. He hadn’t meant to kiss her, and he should get his hands off her. Now. But he held her close, relishing the soft, fascinating warmth of her in his arms too much to be sensible.

“Why?”

“I should have asked, or—” Or something.

“Truth? That was wonderful. And I would very much like another.”

“Yes.” Yes, to both, for him as well.

Determined to prove himself a gentleman, he held her lightly, taking only the kiss, sweet and slow and intense as the first.

But this kiss too had to end.

Christopher rested his forehead against hers. A big mistake, that kiss, but incredible. A chuckle escaped him.

“What’s funny?”

“Just this day turned out so different than I planned this morning.”

“For me, too. A far better day. Thank you.”

An out-of-left-field, disconcerting thought clobbered him. “Shit.” He knew nothing about his roots here...He yanked his hands away.

“What’s the matter?”

Feeling foolish, he had to ask. “We’re not related, are we?” Be just his luck if she ended up being some sort of cousin...

Margie’s laughter rang out. “No, not at all.”

“Thank goodness.” Christopher shifted, hooking thumbs into his pockets to keep his hands in check.

How to Get Good Reviews on Amazon - #Book Blast, #Review and #Prize! #goddessfish

HOW TO GET GOOD REVIEWS ON AMAZON
By
Theo Rogers

BLURB:
How To Get Good Reviews On Amazon is a simple, no-nonsense guide that teaches exactly what it says it does. Based on both psychological science and thousands of hours of conversation with some of Amazon’s top reviewers, it takes you behind the scenes into the reviewing subculture that has grown up on Amazon’s website. It gives you a deep, insider’s knowledge of how the top reviewers think and operate. It not only shows you what to do: it takes you inside the reviewers’ heads so that you can see for yourself both how these techniques work and why they’re so effective.

Lessons include:

·        A simple, four-part formula for writing emails that get your work reviewed.
·        Three things never to say when communicating with reviewers!
·        How to pick reviewers who are more likely to give you a good review.
·        How to reduce the chance that a reviewer you contact will post a bad review – even if it turns out they don’t like your work!
·        How people get caught out when receiving reviews from friends and family.

This book teaches an honest, straightforward approach that works. It works because it’s not based gimmicks or tricks but on a real understanding of how Amazon reviewers operate: most of all on what they expect from authors and other sellers. If you want to know how to talk to Amazon reviewers in a way that will make them respect you as a professional and see you as the kind of seller they actually want to help, this is the book for you.

Excerpt:

Sellers do quite often turn up on forums on Amazon, specifically asking for reviews. Unfortunately, a while ago Amazon changed its policies to expressly forbid this sort of behavior in all forums but one: the Meet Our Authors forum. The trouble with this is that the Meet Our Authors forum is very largely just a bunch of authors spamming each other. Very few seem to have any real interest in what the others are saying.

Despite Amazon’s rule against using its forums for self promotion, people still do it. And in practice the reception that authors and other sellers get when they post on any of the multitude of forums does vary. To some degree it depends on how the author or seller handles themselves.

The other thing you should always be extremely careful about is paying close attention to the codes of behavior considered appropriate among the forum regulars. Different forums have different levels of tolerance for authors or other sellers seeking reviews, or otherwise promoting themselves. For example, the Romance forum has a reputation as a place you should absolutely never leave this kind of post – unless you actually want to be ripped to shreds. Indeed, the Romance forum has developed a reputation as an extremely hostile place for authors in general. So it is important to do your homework on the specific forum you’re considering using.

Nona's review:
Question: How do you get a review on Amazon?
Answer: You ask for one.

Okay, it’s nowhere near that simple. But it’s something I honestly did not know when my first book was published. I had no idea that it was possible to approach an Amazon reviewer and ask her to read my romance. Some authors are very promotion savvy and others, like me, are slower to catch on. Writing the book is only half the battle. We then have to promote ourselves and our book. It can seem overwhelming and sometimes downright scary.

And we need reviews! The more reviews you get, the more attention your book receives and the more copies it’s likely to sell. And where will those reviews give you the most bang for the buck? Amazon.
Sure, there are other booksellers out there, but let’s be real. Amazon’s the biggie.

Now when I say “bang for the buck”, that’s just an expression. Mr. Theo Rogers, author of “How to Get Good Reviews on Amazon” would never advise you to buy reviews—or heaven forbid, offer a bribe in return for one. Nor would he advise you to create a fake account to give yourself five stars. And PLEASE don’t get all your friends and relatives to sign on and give you stellar reviews.

Theo Rogers is himself a popular Amazon reviewer. That’s what makes this booklet (48 pages) special. He’s an insider. He knows the community, its members, its inner workings.  It’s a tight-knit group. And most of all, it’s a group of people who love books. They take reviewing very seriously, and they do it for love.

Mr. Rogers spends some time explaining reviewer rankings and what they mean. A review from someone with a high ranking can help boost your book. He also tells you how to select possible reviewers for your book and how best to approach them. And he tells you specifically what NOT to do. An author must tread carefully, especially around the Amazon forums. A blunder there can backfire.

He also provides links that help explain his points and save readers time and frustration for having to search for this information ourselves.

Though some of Mr. Rogers’ advice seemed like common sense, some of it seemed counter-intuitive and surprised me. But when he explained his reasoning, I nodded and thought, Oh, I see. His book offers some very thought provoking and solid advice. I recommend it for any author who would like to try his/her hand at approaching a high-ranking Amazon reviewer in hopes of a review.

Of course, there’s never a guarantee of a good review. The most you can ask for is an honest one. But if you follow Theo Rogers’ advice, choose your prospect wisely and approach him/her courteously, your chances are much improved. Thank you, Mr. Rogers!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review J.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Theo Rogers combines years of coalface experience on Amazon's website with formal training and qualifications in a range of business and social science disciplines. He's spent literally thousands of hours talking with Amazon reviewers, getting inside their heads, and learning what makes them tick. He's spent almost as many hours observing the carnage that so often takes place on Amazon's forums. In the process he's developed a deep insider's knowledge of the reviewing subculture that's grown up on Amazon's website.

He's also seen a lot of authors and other would-be sellers make the same mistakes in their dealings with that subculture - over and over again.

As a result of his experiences, Theo has come to believe that yes, there is a simple formula that works: a way of dealing with reviewers that's honest, powerful, and extremely effective at winning reviewers over, getting them on your side, and making them actually want to help you.
