Merry #Christmas and a Yummy New Year! #recipes #beverages #gløgg

Happy Wednesday, friends! Those of us who celebrate Christmas are pretty busy right now getting ready for the big event. There's plenty of baking and cooking going on in preparation. So much about the holidays seems to center around food and family traditions. I'd like to share some of mine with you as well as share a recipe to help celebrate the holiday and make it a little more jolly.

I'm Italian on my father's side and Scandinavian on my mother's. Both cultures have some interesting ways of celebrating the Christmas season.
On Christmas Eve, many Italian and Italian-American families enjoy a buffet of different kinds of seafood. That meal is known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Why seven fishes? Well, some say it's because God took seven days to create the universe. Or maybe because there are seven sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church. Or perhaps the explanation, like so many things, will have to remain a mystery.
Something my family often enjoyed Christmas Eve was shrimp, which was a rare treat for us.  A special dish often associated with this feast is salted cod fish or baccalà. I've never had it myself, and to tell the truth am not particularly eager to try. (Hey, I could be wrong, maybe it's very tasty.)

My mother's parents came from Sweden and Denmark and those Scandinavian countries are no slouches either when it comes to Christmas Eve dinner. After a sumptuous meal, which often includes roast pork, duck, goose or ham, rice pudding will be served. Inside the treat is one whole almond or a raisin. Whoever gets the portion with the hidden goodie is given a small gift and promised good luck all year.

A traditional Christmas libation is Gløgg or Glögg. (There seems to be variation of spelling and pronunciation. In our house we pronounced it glug.) This is a beverage made with wine, whiskey and spices and served warm. My mother would make this from my grandfather's recipe.

Here's a recipe that's similar to my grandpa's:

1 bottle of port wine (my mom always used ruby port, but you might prefer something less sweet)
¼ - ½ bottle whiskey
1 cinnamon stick
A few whole cloves
2 – 3 tablespoons sugar (if desired)
1 cup dark raisins
½ cup blanched slivered almonds

Combine the wine, whiskey and spices in a pot and heat on the stove. Once it's hot, remove spices with a slotted spoon and add the raisins and almonds. Serve in small cups with a spoonful of raisins and nuts in each cup (a treat to eat once you've drunk the glogg).

This can be made in advance and stored in wine bottles. It should be reheated to serve.

Yum. Delicious, but it's some powerful stuff!

Happy Holidays, everyone! I hope Santa brings you everything you wish for!

#Werewolves Love #Cupcakes! To Mate a Werewolf @KryssieFortune #recipe #PNR

Happy Friday, all! I have a guest today--Kryssie Fortune is here talking about her new release, To Mate a Werewolf. And guess what? She brought cupcakes! Yum yum, all for me. But don't worry, she also brought a recipe so you can make some, too! Happy reading (and eating :-) )!

Sweet Treats Werewolves Love

Hi,
Kryssie Fortune here. I’ve dropped by to tell you about the heroine in my latest book. She discovered werewolves love cake.

Last time I saw her, she gave some of her recipes to share with my friends.
Of course, Ellie never had time for such fancy decorations shown below. The Lykae soldiers always got to her buns before she’d finished

Excerpt

He lifted the book from her hands. “Mom, I think I gave you the wrong idea about Ellie last night.”
His mother flung her arms around him. “Congratulations on your win. Now listen, young man. Ellie's a treasure, and she knows her way around a wood-burning stove. When she offered to take over the catering, I could have kissed her. Goodness knows how she’ll find the time, but she promised to set up tables and benches too. ”
Joel’s shoulders sagged with relief. His mother always judged people correctly, and his clever Ellie had charmed her. She’s mine, but she doesn’t know it yet. A growl rumbled through his throat when he realized she could have any man she chose. One taste of her delicious concoctions, and she had them in the palm of her hand. The only one dumb enough to resist her had been him. The lush contours of her body and the sweet taste of her lips fascinated him. .

Recipe for Ellie’s Cupcake Tower

55g (2oz) Margarine (1/4 cup U.S. measurement)
28g (1oz) Caster Sugar (2 Tbsp U.S. measurement)

1 egg
1 tsp Baking Powder (1.2 tsp U.S. measurement)
2 tsp Vanilla Essence (2.4 tsp U.S. measurement)

Recipe

1. Mix the flour, sugar, egg and margarine together in a large mixing bowl for two to three minutes until fully combined.

2. To this mixture add the Vanilla essence and Baking powder and stir again until completely mixed.

3. Fill the muffin cases to just over half way.

4. Put in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 190C (180C Fan) Gas 5 until springy and a light golden colour. (For U.S. readers, over temperature should be 375 degrees Fahrenheit.)

Note from Nona: For friends in the states, I converted the ingredient measurements to U.S. standards using http://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/convert/measurements.html.
Oven temperature conversions were made at: http://www.metric-conversions.org/temperature/celsius-to-fahrenheit.htm

Happy baking!

Fourth of July Fun and a #Recipe! #Romance #IndependenceDay

Happy Friday, friends and Happy Fourth of July! Many of us will be celebrating with cookouts, fireworks, and cracking open a few cold ones.

Some author friends and I have an additional way for you to celebrate this weekend! Saturday July 5, author members of Nice Girls Writing Naughty are sponsoring a party on our blog and in our Facebook group. Games and fun include a scavenger hunt with a $50 GC grand prize. There will be smaller prizes as well. I hope you'll join us!

Speaking of holidays, have you ever heard of Christmas in July? Well, I'm celebrating that, too. How? Why with a couple of recipes for Krupnik, that's how!

What's Krupnik, you ask? Well, it happens to be a Polish liqueur flavored with honey and spices, including cinnamon, cloves and peppercorns. Orange and lemon zest add to the flavors. Adding vodka or grain alcohol is what gives the drink its "kick." It's a drink traditionally served at Christmas, but I'm sharing it with you now because it happens to play an important part in my new release, Read to Me

In the story Mr. Milosc, the owner of the bookstore where the hero and heroine connect, offers each of them a small glass of Krupnik.

The glasses held golden liquor with a slightly spicy aroma. Blaise felt a bit tipsy just inhaling it.
Mr. Miłosc lifted his glass. “Na zdrowie. To your health.”
Blaise returned the sentiment in English and took a sip. The rich, sweet flavor of honey rolled over her tongue. She gave Mr. Miłosc a questioning look.
“Krupnik,” he explained. “A very old Polish recipe.”
.....
She and Guy enjoyed the sweet liqueur in silence, taking small sips, letting the flavor roll around their mouths and fill their senses. Though the portions were small, Blaise began to feel a pleasant buzz. Whether from the krupnik or her companion’s powerful presence, she didn’t know.

People of Polish descent often make their own Krupnik (I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Milosc did), although if that's not your cup of tea, you can also buy it. But I came across a couple of recipes in case you'd like to try the home-made kind. (Due to copyright concerns, I'm linking the recipes rather than copying them here.) Here's one that uses vodka. I also found this one, which uses grain alcohol (e.g. Everclear). The drink may be served hot or cold. As Mr. Milosc would say, Na zdrowie!
