BLURB:
Tara Thornton hasn’t spoken to her sister in two years, ever
since Azure married the man of Tara’s dreams. Tired of the rift, Azure invites
her to take a Mediterranean cruise on a friend’s yacht and, bowing to family
pressure, Tara accepts.
Forced to be in close proximity with the man she still desires,
Tara is thrown into confusion. The presence of celebrity theme park owner Liam
Wilder and the reality of his marriage to Azure send Tara into a tailspin and,
in an attempt to regain control, she responds to the advances of hot fellow
guest Ryan Hyde, while determined to feel no affection for him.
But Ryan has a way of getting under her skin, and Tara’s plan to
get closer to Liam is rapidly losing its importance as Ryan begins to break
down her defences. Can she let go of Liam, let Ryan into her heart…and tell
Azure the real reason for her silence?
Excerpt:
Standing next to her
husband—her husband—Azure appeared taller than she had ever done. While
Tara had always worn her height like a uniform, Azure had worn hers like a
casual coat one might leave open, carefree and loose, hands thrust into the
pockets. Her curves, her relaxed stance, her playful movements had all
diminished her—but now, although the swell of her hips and breasts was even
more pronounced than before, Azure was every inch of six feet tall, her head
level with his.
Him.
It was strange to
see him in a formal suit. Even stranger to see him pulling out a chair for the
woman she had only two years ago called her sister. Tara’s fingers gripped the
back of her seat, her body tensing with restraint. The Liam Wilder of the
commercials was exciting, unpredictable, unknowable. He was at once warm and
passionate, calming and vital, crackling with energy to the tips of his
hair—which even now was still in uncontrollable blond curls, the only point in
which Tara could recognise the man from her photograph.
A wave of feeling,
both dreamy and cloying, seemed to descend upon her. It was the moment she had
pictured for so long, and yet, at the same time, was a resounding slap in the
face. For she had been remembering Liam Wilder the character, and in front of
her was Liam Wilder the man, and Liam Wilder the man was married to Azure.
Impossible,
unknowable, and her brother-in-law.
***Nona’s Review
of Photograph by Tanith
Davenport***
This was a very interesting read. The author takes some
chances, because our heroine Tara is not (at least to begin with) a very
sympathetic character. Not only is she in love with her twin sister Azure’s husband,
she plans to break up their marriage.
Tara’s been in love with Liam Wilder for years. A
childhood crush, first formed upon seeing him on television, has grown into
something resembling obsession. When Azure and Liam fell in love and married,
Tara was shattered. No matter that she and Liam had no relationship to speak
of, Azure’s apparent “betrayal” destroyed the twin sisters’ bond. They haven’t
spoken in two years when Azure invites Tara to accompany them on a cruise with
several other guests. The only reason Tara accepts is to see Liam again—and to
steal him from Azure.
The story alternates between Tara’s and Azure’s point
of view. While initially Azure seems to be “the girl who has everything”, we
discover that she’s tormented by PTSD from her time in the military. Tara, too,
is not quite what she seems. Though outwardly she’s tough as nails and has no
problem using men for sex, her obsession with Liam shows another side of her,
one that’s more childlike and immature.
The theme of this Totally Bound series is “What’s her
secret?” There are plenty of characters keeping secrets and I enjoyed the
surprises as each layer of truth was revealed. Tara does a lot of growing up as
she begins to see her obsession for what it is, and discovers real love with a
man she meets on the cruise. She lets her guard down with Azure, as well, and
the twins’ rift begins to heal.
There’s a lot to enjoy in the story: hot and smexy sex,
intrigue, excitement, and a peek into the lives of the rich and famous. What
really stuck with me was the theme of love vs. obsession and the difference
between what we think we know vs.
reality. I recommend Photograph for
a fascinating, somewhat unusual romantic read.
