Excerpt:
“Not now, Conner. I told you it’s bad luck to see the
dress,” Chloe called out.
“I have your keys, Chloe and I don’t think it’s bad luck for
the father of the groom to see the dress.” Wes’s voice carried through the
closed door.
Chloe froze. Wes.
What was he doing there? The saleswoman smiled and before Chloe could utter a
word, the efficient woman was heading the door.
“Uh,” Chloe stammered, not sure what to do or say.
“Can I come in?” Wes repeated just as the door opened and
the saleswoman ushered him in.
Holy mackerel,” Wes said. Chloe thought she saw him stagger
back slightly. “Wow.” He stood in the room, staring at her.
“She’s stunning, isn’t she?” the saleswoman asked proudly.
“That she is. Completely stunning.” Wes’s eyes were locked
on Chloe perched on the platform, looking at Wes who he’d her car keys in his
hand.
“I’ll just be out front,” the saleswoman said, excusing
herself and leaving Chloe and Wes alone in the large change room.
The woman left and Chloe wanted more than anything to run
out of the room. Not to be left alone with Wes, it was too humiliating her
feelings for him and that kiss in the elevator.
“I brought your keys,” Wes said, moving toward Chloe.
“Wasn’t easy, but I got them out of your car. Conner called me to rescue you as
he’s with clients. Had a heck of time with that Beemer of yours. German
engineering and all.
“I don’t need rescuing, but thank you,” she said curtly, trying
to appear in control and unfazed by him standing there, his hunky body
tormenting her with embarrassment. “Just put them on the chaise by my purse.” She
motioned to the chaise.
“Sure.” He eyed her and then placed the keys where she
asked.
“And could you hand me those shoes?” Chloe asked, motioning
to the shoe bag next to her purse.
Wes took the wedding shoes out of the protective bag and
handed the first shoe to Chloe.
“You didn’t answer my calls.” His eyes locked on hers as she
tried to slip on the strappy jeweled sandal.
She really didn’t want to talk about last night—she wanted
to put those crazy feelings she had for him as far out of her mind as possible,—but
it was going to be hard with him looking at her like that, his sultry chocolate-brown
eyes searching her. Like he wanted to sweep her up and carry her far away. Or
maybe that’s just what she wanted.
“I wanted to talk to you about that. I want to apologize,”
he said with a serious look. “If you thought in any way I acted
inappropriately, I am sincerely sorry, I didn’t mean at all…” he paused and
looked unsure as he clutched her shoe in his hand.
Chloe’s cheeks burned as she looked at Wes, his hand wrapped
around her delicate shoe.
“No, I didn’t think that at all. Nothing happened. Okay?”
“Okay.” He handed her the other shoe. “Damn these things are
tiny.” He toyed with the delicate shoe before looking up at her. “I just want
my son to be happy and you two to be happy together. I don’t want anything to
change that.”
“That’s what I want too,” she said with less conviction than
she felt.
“Do you?” He handed her the shoe, those brown eyes boring
into her, igniting a fire within her that she tried to suppress.
Balancing on the one shoe, she bent down and gathered the
satin dress in attempt the slip on the other shoe. Struggling to find her foot
under the masses of fabric, she stumbled slightly off balance and teetered on
the edge of the platform.
Wes reached out and caught her as she tumbled into his arms.
He grasped her around her waist, the slippery satin dress sliding through his
fingers, his hands ending up holding her right under her breasts. She looked up
at him. His muscles flexed, were rock hard under her touch, and she could feel
smell his wonderful masculine scent. Damn it, she wanted him.
